Below are some examples of popular Tufts & Batson designs. At this time, we are not taking orders on production rods. Please contact us if you have any questions, or have a special commission in mind.
693Hp • 6'9" 3 weight - Originally design for backpacking in the Smoky Mountains, this rod offers full-loading in pocket water with power enough for distance. Supple and sweet, this mighty-mite can be made as a three-piece to pack down for easy carrying slotted into your backpack.
704DF • 7'0" 4 weight • Graceful and compliant in a small package with proportionally heavier lower tips to aid in loading and damping to give the rod full casting suppleness without becoming too brisk or stiff. A rod that punches above its weight.
734M • 7'3" 4 weight - A well-handling, slower side of medium, pure progressive that is balanced and nimble like a jaguar after a jackrabbit. This is a 'paint-the-water' kind of rod, swinging intuitively and nicely packaged as a two-piece.
734F • 7'3" 4 weight - The fastest rod we make. Light tips, lightweight. A brisk pointy nature with modern feel while still being able to bend deeply without getting 'tippy'. This rod brings bamboo into 'today' while retaining its traditional roots.
7645DF • 7'6" 4/5 weight - The quintessential Tufts & Batson taper. A medium, full-flexing, light tipped rod with a slight swell under the grip which raises the flex-point without adding unnecessary weight or causing the rod to become unwieldy. The perfect dry fly and versatile rod that is equally at home on small pocket water as it is on larger streams. Casting both a four or five-weight line with equal aplomb, this multi-faceted rod displays its many colors playfully throughout long days while eradicating sloppiness due to casting fatigue.
765Hp • 7'6" 5 weight - Like a Kestrel, this rod seems to hover in thin air while still being able to face the wind. A very lightweight semi-parabolic rod featuring a radical design of light tips, stiffer mid and a lighter butt. Like all T&Bs, available in a 3 piece. The amazing thing about this rod is that it throws ultra-tight loops while delivering a sweet smooth 'kick' during the wrist snap/turnover presentation. It seems to know where you want to go as a caster.
795WF • 7'9" 5 weight - Slow and supple, limber and light, building power as it goes. Close-in or far-off. This organic feeling taper will surprise with its power, while being so delicate and refined. Harkens back to the Old Catskill tradition as a lightweight progressive with enough 'meat' in the tips to dampen any temptation to tip bounce.
804DF • 8'0" 4 weight - The swift 'Gazelle' is long-legged and agile, balancing the elusive feat of being a true four-weight while being eight-feet long. Beautiful and elegant in nature, it features a slight swell in the butt and long delicate tips. Arriving as a rod that feels like a true four-weight but is actually much more.
795M • 7'9" 5 weight - A classic and sturdy progressive. This rod bends top to bottom with an even-tempered nature while having enough backbone for bigger flies, bigger fish and bigger water. This is our most popular taper with the reputation for being a practical and capable as an all-arounder and giving the intrinsic benefits of bamboo to the newcomer and experienced enthusiast alike.
805M • 8'0" 5 weight - This rod continues our medium progressive bigger river series with an eight-foot in a five-weight configuration. The kind of rod that likes to work a weighted nymph by your feet and go back into a single-haul, shooting the line far-out to run a riffle beyond the eddy. If you could only have one rod, this might be it. Like all Tufts & Batsons, this design is 'tuned' for a predictable, performance-orientated nature that makes the angler's needs paramount to design.
866M • 8'6" 6 weight - To conclude the bigger river series, this is a larger rod that handles a six-weight line while retaining all of the well-tempered characteristics of the other rods of its type. This was created at a request from Tokyo, Japan to match our medium eight-foot five-weight for casting feel in a longer, heavier rod. Suffice to say we succeeded and the angler is happily exploring the streams of the world with a beautifully matched pair. At Tufts & Batson we listen to you as an angler to find a design that is exactly what you're looking for before you can necessarily verbalize it yourself. This is the hallmark of great design. And the hallmark of Tufts & Batson.
